Saltzer Vein Clinic

“Ok, you have some varicose veins, but… Do you have venous reflux?”

This question is more important that many people realize. Venous reflux is a common medical problem where the blood traveling in the leg veins “refluxes” or, slides back down the leg veins instead of going upwards, back to the heart. This condition is a result of the ever present force of gravity while we are standing and the fact that age, previous blood clots, pregnancy, and other conditions cause the small valves in the vein to malfunction and allow the blood to slip back downwards, towards the feet. This de-oxygenated blood then pools in the lower leg veins and creates several problems over time. One of the earliest manifestations is varicose veins, which sometimes may be noted as a painful throbbing sensation, because of the pressure of the “old” blood which is pooling in them. Other problems then result over time, such as discoloration of the skin, increased swelling of the surrounding tissue (edema), and ultimately, skin breakdown and chronic sores called venous stasis ulcers. The goal is to prevent these later changes from occurring and treat the reflux early, since it only worsens over time.

So, whenever a provider is examining a patient who has complained of varicose veins, the most important question is whether those veins are the result of venous reflux (bad vein valves). The reason this is so important, is that if the reflux, which is the actual cause of the problem, is not treated, then treated problem veins will recur. We encounter many patients who have previously been treated in a med spa or shopping mall facility where laser or sclerotherapy treatment was performed, but the patients find that their problem veins recur in a few years time. Many of these patients are found to have venous reflux on a comprehensive ultrasound evaluation. Here, at Saltzer vein clinic, patients who are suspected of having venous reflux are screened by a Registered Vascular Ultrasound Technician to find whether or not they have venous reflux. If they do, the underlying reflux is treated with a catheter inserted into the vein using laser or radiofrequency energy. If they do not have reflux, they are usually treated by injecting a sclerosant chemical into the veins or by use of a cutaneous laser for these veins.

As mentioned above, if the patient does have venous reflux, almost all insurers and medicare programs consider this a medical problem and it is covered as such. The patient who chooses Saltzer Vein Clinic benefits from our expertise in treating all sizes of varicose veins as well as the causes of venous reflux and late effects of reflux, such as venous ulcers. Not only do patients benefit from our high tech, comfortable, American College of Radiology approved imaging facility, they also receive care from a board certified surgeon and phycisian assistant. We have invested much more into these resources than most of our competitors. We have multiple options for treatment, all the way from ultrasound guided injection, different laser treatments, radiofrequency treatment, to actual surgery. As you can imagine, having all of these options available means we can tailor the best treatment for each individual patient, instead of “pushing” our patients to be treated with limited options. Just like home or car repair, having the right tool for the job at hand makes all the difference. Now that you know how much we have invested into these resources, you would likely conclude that we charge more than some of the smaller shops in the area. Our costs are cheaper than any of the area vein treatment facilities and I encourage patients to call around and prove this for themselves.

Snake River Stampede and Saltzer

Friday, June 27th, 2008

Wow! The Snake River Stampede is only a few weeks away. The rodeo is such an exciting time for Nampa and the surrounding area. Saltzer is always happy being a part of events in this community. Friday, July 11 is “Hot Chili Nights”. The local Lions club is holding the event in downtown Nampa. Saltzer is proud to be an award sponsor for the chili cookoff. That same night there is a Kidz Rodeo. There will be free ice cream, balloons, goody bags, and a carnival!

Saturday, July 12 is the big parade. All horses! Most parades I sit by the sidelines and tolerate all the rest and wait for the horses, but this one is a treat. No waiting for the horses. There will also be a pancake breakfast, farmers market, arts and crafts and more.

Saturday evening Saltzer Medical Group is proud to present the “Movie Under the Stars” If you’ve never been this is great fun! Bring your blankets and comfy clothes and curl up and watch Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory! There is going to be popcorn, and chocolate for all!

Monday and Tuesday you can have a buckaroo breakfast at the Idaho Center, and watch some of the best rodeo athletes in the world compete in the slack competition.

Finally, on Tuesday, July 15 it is time for the Wildest, Fastest show on earth, the Snake River Stampede. From Mutton Busting to Bull Riding you will be on the edge of your seat. Make sure you pay close attention to this year’s specialty act, the One Armed Bandit. Saltzer is proud to have the opportunity to bring you thus unique act. This horseman will intrigue and amaze you!

I hope you have the opportunity to come out and participate in some of the community events and attend the rodeo. I am hoping my daughter will have a slot in the Mutton Busting this year, so if you see a five year old girl in a pink shirt, with purple chinks that’s probably her, so cheer extra loud!

Have a great day, and I will see you at the rodeo!

Saltzer and Melba Olde Tyme 4th of July Celebration

Friday, May 23rd, 2008

One of the things that makes me so pround working for Saltzer is their level of commitment to the communities it serves. Every month at our business development meetings we discuss lots of opportunities on how we can contribute and make a difference. In the past year we have done some great things. We worked with the Nampa Police Department to get a “Mobile McGruff” who will appeal to kids and help keep our kids on track. We also sponsored the Health Fest at the Idaho center. What a great event. We have also done dozens of sponsorships that include Relay for Life, Special Olympics, Drug Free Idaho, Boise Philharmonic, Nampa Swim Team, and many other worthy causes. One of our latest ventures is new to Saltzer. We are the parade sponsors for the Melba Olde Tyme 4th of July celebration. If you have never been to Melba on the fourth, you are missing out. It is lots of fun for everyone. There are kids games, a chicken round-up, horse shoe pitching, a classic car show, and of course the parade. The event is topped off with an AMAZING fireworks display. For more information go to www.melba4thofjuly.com. I am looking forward to seeing you there.

Why Saltzer Medical Group?

Monday, May 5th, 2008

As the director of satellite clinics for Saltzer Medical Group, I have the unique opportunity to interact with many of our physicians, nurses and CSRs as well as most of our support staff including IT and maintenance. I have an all-inclusive view of Saltzer and I must tell you, I love what I see.

We have an extremely professional staff who can treat the patient knowing that as part of a multi-specialty clinic, almost every diagnostic or treatment need a patient has is available at their finger tips. With our state of the art electronic medical record, continuity of care can be provided no matter at which location the patient’s appointment is scheduled. This means a patient can be seen at QuickCare in Nampa in the morning, and their primary care physician in Meridian need look no further than their computer where he or she will have immediate access to the patient’s morning visit notes at their finger tips. There is no clinic in the valley who can better provide this comprehensive care for their patient.

I have been blessed to be a part of this clinic for over 7 years now. I look forward to many many more years of service and am comforted knowing that my family will receive the best in care as well.

McGruff the Crime Dog

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

Saltzer Medical Group and the Nampa Police Department unveiled Mobile McGruff yesterday at the Nampa Chamber of Commerce luncheon. Saltzer sponsored the crime fighting pooch, and we are so proud to have made this contributionn to the Nampa police. If you’ve never seen a mobile McGruff, he is quite a treat. He drives a car, plays music, moves his head, blinks his eyes and talks. And, as city coucil woman, Pam White, discovered, he also shoots water at all those in his way. Dr. Tom Patterson, who is the chair of our Business Development Committee made the presentation to Chief of Police Bill Augsburger. A few kids showed up to meet McGruff, and enjoyed their visit. One was mine, and she had a great time. I am sure if you are at any community events in Nampa this year you will be seeing McGruff, so if you get a chance, say hello to the newest Nampa cop, but stay out of his way, or you might get drenched like Pam!

What a Great Place to Work!

Monday, February 11th, 2008

Wow, what a great place to work! I’ve been the Director of Business Developmentat Saltzer for eight months now, and it has been wonderful. I was at my last job for seven and a half years, so the decision to come to Saltzer was a big one. I’ve been a patient at Saltzer for years, so I knew they provided a great patient experience, and physicians I trust. In addition I was drawn by the level of involvement Saltzer has in the communites it serves. When I came to my initial interview I was greeted by friendly people, and immediately I felt this is where I belonged. Well, long story short, here I am eight months later. Each day is a new adventure and a new challenge, and I love every minute.

As Director of Business Development it is my job to make sure you know about Saltzer Medical Group and have a great experience while you are here. I would love to hear about your great experiences at Saltzer. Please use the comment area to share with me about a doctor, nurse or other Saltzer employee that has made a difference for you for one moment or a lifetime.

Web 2.0 and Saltzer Medical Group

Monday, January 21st, 2008

We’ve been getting very excited about the changes taking place at www.saltzermed.com and finally, it’s here! If you’re a regular user of internet sites, you will be used to terms such as ‘blog’, ‘podcast’ and ‘web 2.0′. If you aren’t used to those terms, it boils down to this: content. We want to provide fresh, informative content that you can trust. In the medical field, there are a vast amount of websites out there, some trustworthy, some not so, but you don’t go to a doctor in Arizona - you live in Idaho and see a doctor here. So to add to the fresh, informative content, we want to provide you with local news and info.

I attended a lunch at the Meridian Chamber of Commerce about 18 months ago and heard a member of the Blueline Marketing team speak about the use of Web 2.0 technology to communicate with customers. (BlueLine Marketing have since become Tricycle Consulting and RIAFox)

I began thinking and dreaming of how it could be implemented in the medical world to be a useful tool for our patients, and, after meetings, discussions, planning and preparation, this is what we came up with.

The physicians of Saltzer Medical Group will be posting blogs on this website, communicating news and ideas to you that are important to them. You will be able to get to know your physicians better through this site, and to gain valuable, local knowledge. And that’s just the start. At the end of last year, we implemented a medical records program called eClinicalWorks and our plans include the use of the patient portal. This portal, once active (tentatively in 12 months time) will provide patients access to their statements, with bill paying ability, and also to receive communication from their physicians.

We believe that technology serves a purpose, and here it is to better serve our patients. Enjoy the site and let us know your thoughts on the new look!
